On Monday May 13, 1996 at 10:00 a.m., JOSE IVAN MALDONADO, a 34 year old resident of the Monterey Pines Apartment Complex in Tustin was found murdered on the first vehicle turn out area of the Corona Expressway (SR-71), north of the Riverside (SR-91) Freeway, at Prado Dam. MALDONADO, who is a native of Honduras, was found shot to death inside his vehicle.

MALDONADO was last seen leaving a residence in the city of Santa Ana at 9:30 p.m., Sunday May 12, 1996. Investigators believe MALDONADO reached the gated parking lot of the Monterey Pines Apartment complex in Tustin where he was confronted by unknown suspect(s).

During the early part of April 1996, MALDONADO had been confronted by at least two males Hispanics in the parking lot of the Monterey Pines Apartment complex. One of the subjects was armed with a baseball bat. One of the suspect's accused MALDONADO of dating the man's wife/or girlfriend. The accusation was denied by MALDONADO and the suspects left. MALDONADO reported this incident and described the suspect's vehicle as a small red compact, similar to a Toyota.
