TUSTIN POLICE DEPARTMENT

Employment Opportunities

Pre-Academy

The Tustin Police Department’s Training Division designed the four week program to prepare the recruit for the Police Academy, academically, physically, and mentally. The pre-academy is designed to develop the recruit to an enhanced level of physical fitness. It will prepare the recruit to perform physically demanding police tasks and at the same time, to instill in the recruit to maintain a high level of fitness throughout your career. The pre-academy also assists in transitioning the recruit from civilian life into the police academy lifestyle.

Academy

After your appointment, you will be sponsored to attend a 24 week training academy. At the academy, you will go to lectures and demonstrations, study textbooks, review laws, court cases, and law enforcement articles, you will complete homework, reports, and examinations on course material. Course subjects will include law enforcement principals, criminal law, rules and evidence, search and seizure, arrest and control methods, traffic laws, juvenile laws, first aid, care and use of firearms, patrol theory and methods, physical conditioning and self-defense.

If you are currently attending a full-time P.O.S.T. certified academy, you are encouraged to apply for a police academy graduate position. If you are already attending such an academy and you successfully complete the physical agility test process, you may be sponsored through the remainder of the academy.
